We all wanted to communicate effectively in English, but there are always some obstacles for many of us. In order to learn English speaking skills, the best thing is to talk with a native speaker. But not all of us have that option!
So the question is:
How can you practice speaking English without anyone's help?
In this article, we will tell you 5 important steps to improve your spoken skills without any other speaker. These tips are very much easy and also not time-consuming.
1. Think in English
The first step towards improving our speaking skills is to think in English. We
have seen that many individuals are not good speakers but good writers, so
language is not a difficult thing but our thinking is what makes it difficult.
If we
think in our native language and then translate it into English, it becomes
difficult as translation is not an easy thing and requires time due to
conversion from your own language to English. So, always think in English even
if you are thinking about eating something or thinking about doing something.
Also,
try to use an English-to-English dictionary to learn new words. By doing
this, you never have to use your native language and do translation afterward.
This way you'll learn to speak English easily.
2. Talk to Yourself
Whenever you’re at home (or alone somewhere else) you can improve English speaking with your favorite person. Any guesses who this favorite person is? Well, this person is none other than YOU. When we talk to our own selves, we have no fear of judgment or criticism. In fact, we can easily say what we want to say without hesitation.
If you are already doing that, try speaking out loud. Not that loud
that another person hears you but loud enough that you don’t feel like
whispering.
While speaking
think about the mistakes that you made, and if you have no idea about your
mistakes, you can record yourself while speaking out loud and listen to the
recording to correct your mistakes. This will help you to become more
comfortable in speaking English.
3. Use a Mirror
Do
spare some time from your daily routine and talk in front of a mirror. Talk on
any topic or about anything whether it is related to fashion, cooking,
technology, or lifestyle. You can also set a timer and start or stop speaking
according to that timer. Initially try to speak for a minute and gradually
increase that time to 5 to 10 minutes.
The purpose of this is to watch your body language and your face movements while
you speak. You can also pretend that you are having a discussion. In case you
get stuck and didn't find a word, try to express your idea in a different way.
After that, you can look for that word in a dictionary. It will also increase
your vocabulary and you can easily learn English speaking.
Mirror
can also help you to practice words that you find difficult to pronounce. You
can observe the shape of your mouth and try to shape it the way native speakers
make.
4. Focus on English Fluency,
Not Grammar
When
you are communicating to the other person, stopping more and more means you are
less confident and less comfortable. It gives a bad impression and the other
person gets bored or his attention gets diverted. So, fluency is the most
important thing when it comes to learning speaking English.
Try to
challenge yourself every time you practice speaking by not stopping the entire
time. Does not care about the grammatical range and accuracy at this point, The
main purpose here is to speak fluently, and if you are able to do that another
person will understand your point more clearly and they will find you confident.
Grammar and other things can be corrected later on when you become fluent.
5. Learn Phrases, Not Words
Last
but not the least option is to learn different phrases. Only using correct
grammar and vocabulary doesn't make you look like a native speaker. Other
things are also required and one of the required things is a phrase. For
example, you can say “how are you today?” but a native person might say “how’re
you doing?” or “what’s up?” instead. To sound natural, phrases and expressions
are a must, otherwise, it will feel like you are just copying.
Tip for
learning phrases is that, when you learn a new word, learn a phrase with it. It
will help you to remember how the word can be used and what it means.
So, these are some of the tricks that you can use to improve and learn English speaking. But remember, hard work is the key thing and without it, one cannot achieve anything.
